Lerwick's new international ferry terminal
became fully operational in October 2002 and continues to provide
excellent facilities for passengers. These include a modern Terminal Building and an elevated overhead walkway which links the ships to the Terminal Building greatly improving comfort and safety for passengers. The improved facilities have contributed to a rise in ferry passengers using the Port to in excess of 130,000 annually. The offices of passenger ferry operator NorthLink are within the terminal building.
As well as the passenger ferries "Hjaltland" and "Hrossey" operated
by NorthLink Ferries and the international passenger ferry "Norrona" operated
by Smyril Line, there are a number of other freight-only
roll-on roll-off vessels also using the Holmsgarth Terminal
complex.
The new 20m wide linkspan bridge is used by NorthLink
Ferries and Smyril
Line for their car ferries and this berth
also connects to the covered walkway for passengers. Freight
ferries use the other ro-ro berths in the area.
