Friends and colleagues gathered recently at the Port Operations Centre to mark the retirement of John Hughson.

John joined the Port as General Duties Operative in 1989 and was just short of completing 24 years service prior to his retirement.

A familiar face around the Harbour, he received an award from the Royal Humane Society for his brave action during an incident in February 1997 when he risked his own life (as a non-swimmer) to save a fishermen from drowning who had fallen into the dock at Alexandra Wharf.

Commenting on John’s service, Chief Executive Sandra Laurenson, said “John has been a very dedicated and valued member of staff and we wish him all the very best for his retirement”.
