Sail Training
Lerwick Harbour has a long tradition of welcoming international tall ships and sailing vessels. Sailing has a high profile in the islands and Shetland is pleased to support sail training for young people.
During the season, Lerwick Port Authority has town-centre facilities for summer visitors arriving by sea and has long experience of tall ships and their requirements. Lerwick Boating Club is a friendly and helpful stop and their showers and laundry facilities have been well received by many visiting crews. All amenities are close to hand in the town-centre but for those wishing a quieter experience, there are anchorages available within a short distance.
Lerwick was a host port for the Tall Ships Races in 1999 and looks forward to again hosting the Races over the weekend of 21 – 24 July 2011. The 2011 Races series starts in Waterford, Ireland with a race to Greenock. The leg to Lerwick will be a “Cruise in Company” up the spectacular west coast of Scotland. From Lerwick, the Tall Ships will race to Stavanger prior to a final race leg to Halmstad in Sweden. For more details, please visit The Tall Ships Races Lerwick 2011 website.

Shetland’s own sail training vessel “Swan” has a popular sailing programme at www.swantrust.org.uk with trips from a short evening sail to a long international voyage.
Sail Training Shetland
The build-up to the 2011 Races includes an annual sponsorship programme for sail trainees. Formed in 2009, Sail Training Shetland is a registered Scottish Charity (Charity Number SC041182) and is a collaboration between Lerwick Lerwick Port Authority, Shetland Tall Ships 2011 Ltd and The Swan Trust. This initiative follows on from the success of earlier schemes in 2006 and 2008.
