Sail Training Shetland is pleased to announce that due to a successful sponsorship campaign raising £11,250 so far, fourteen young people, between the ages of 15-25 years old will have the chance take part in The Tall Ships Races 2010.

Trainee places will be available onboard the Swan and Christian Radich during The Tall Ships Races between Kristiansand, Norway and Hartlepool, UK in August.  The application process to become trainees is being launched next week on Friday 16th April.  The application forms will be available on www.sailtrainingshetland.com.

The People’s Postcode Lottery gave a generous £3,500 towards the project through its grant giving organisation the People’s Postcode Trust; Lisa Imlach of the Trust said “We are delighted to support Sail Training Shetland with delivering this exciting scheme for young people.  It gives them a once in a lifetime opportunity to take part in experiencing Tall Ships whilst gaining invaluable life skills, and meeting people from different backgrounds from around the world.”

To date, local sponsors are Lerwick Building Centre, DH Marine, Ocean Kinetics and Lerwick Port Authority, Associate sponsors and supporters are Lerwick Community Council, the Merchant Navy Association of Shetland and Ian Manson (Bletty) Memorial Trust.

Peter Malcolmson, Chairman of Sail Training Shetland is “thrilled that businesses and organisations have been able to support our charity to provide Sail Training opportunities this year.  We hope to encourage as many young people to apply for these places and to build on the success of our previous trainees, who loved the experience onboard Swan in the Small Ships Races in 2009.  We thank all our present sponsors and also look forward to offering a wide range of trainee opportunities next year, when we host The Tall Ships Races 2011.”
