Developing Lerwick's lead in decommissioning

29th November, 2018

Lerwick Port Authority’s bid to the Scottish Government under its Decommissioning Challenge Fund (DCF) has secured a contribution towards the cost of the engineering feasibility study into the proposed concrete decommissioning pad at the deep-water Dales Voe Base.

“The award will contribute to our continuing feasibility study, including overall financing, for a required decommissioning pad at Dale’s Voe which will be a further significant addition to our facilities and reinforce our capabilities in meeting future offshore industry requirements,“ said Port Authority Chief Executive, Captain Calum Grains.

The Scottish Government has also published the nationwide study which was the basis of the announcement in September that Dales Voe had been identified as the optimal location for a UK ultra-deep-water (UDW) decommissioning facility. The study looked at 40 locations and found that Dales Voe would be the most efficient and would target a significant proportion of the £1.2 billion estimated expenditure for onshore recycling and disposal activities.

Lerwick company, Ocean Kinetics, is also receiving a DCF award, for equipment for the remote cutting of steel underwater.
