Lerwick Port Authority joins the fiery festivities this week, celebrating Up Helly Aa, as port Chief Executive Calum Grains, heads up this year’s festival.

Calum will lead the Jarl Squad throughout a busy day of parades and visitations in the community.

The annual festival honours Shetland's Norse ancestry, blending historical and modern community traditions. It is a community-driven event, organised by volunteers, and attracts both locals and visitors from around the world.

Extending maritime connections, Chief Executive Officers, Tom Hutchison, Montrose Port Authority, and Alex MacLeod, Stornoway Port Authority, will also be in the ranks with Calum as guests in his squad, alongside Lerwick Port Authority colleagues Victor Sandison and Alexander Simpson.

You can view the Jarl Squad’s whereabouts through the day on the Up Helly Aa website. In the morning, the squad will muster at the Bressay Ferry Terminal at Alexandra Wharf for a photo opportunity with the galley.

As darkness falls, the spectacular torchlit procession, is followed by the burning of the Viking galley ship. The rest of the evening is given over to a full night of celebrations in the local halls.

We wish Guizer Jarl Calum Grains and his squad a happy and successful festival!
