Maritime Safety Week 2019
1st July 2019
The Department for Transport is holding the second UK Maritime Safety Week from Monday 1 July to Friday 5 July.
The Government will use this week to celebrate the maritime sector’s performance in terms of safety and highlight its aims for future improvement.
The Authority fully supports the promotion of Health and Safety across the maritime sector and takes an active role in promoting safety to its stakeholders and harbour users. Lerwick Harbour led the way in best practice in the marine environment, when it became the first UK port to achieve accreditation to ISO 45001:2018, the Occupational Health and Safety standard, within nine months of it being introduced.
As a member of Port Skills & Safety, the introduction of a new Ports Health & Safety Sector plan is a welcome extension of the Port’s Sector Strategy and six priority areas. The Plan has been in development with senior port leadership and is supported by both The UK Major Ports group and British Ports Association. This is a landmark development because no industry has ever come together to create a Health & Safety Sector Plan that is owned by Industry itself instead of the regulator.
