Preparatory works are underway in Lerwick Harbour to recover the remaining substructure of the former Buchan Alpha floating production unit which broke free from its berth at Dales Voe Base in November while in the final stages of decommissioning and grounded on the west side of the voe, following the lifting of Covid-19-related restrictions.

The structure had already been reduced to clean steel by contractors, Veolia/Peterson. There has been no pollution and no hazard to shipping.

Local engineering company, Ocean Kinetics, using Dutch heavy lift/salvage contractor, HEBO Maritime Service, has been contracted to raise and recover the structure, using HEBO’s crane vessel, HEBO Lift 9, and transfer it to the port’s Greenhead Base for final dismantling and disposal.
