Lerwick Port Authority's continuing development of the harbour is moving into the next phase following the award of a £4.6 million contract to create a new berth and related improvements at Greenhead Base.

The construction of berth seven will create additional frontage extending to over 100 metres. Combined with deepening existing berths five and six as part of the contract, the latest development will extend the continuous berthing with nine metres’ water at the multi-purpose base to 345 metres.

The Port Authority’s development strategy is also expected to advance this month with consent from the Scottish Government for a Harbour Revision Order being formalised. The Order is for a programme of capital projects which will be followed through as funding is finalised.

Sandra Laurenson, the Port Authority’s Chief Executive, said: “This contract is the first phase of the next stage in the development of our infrastructure which will further benefit a range of industries and the Shetland economy.

“The latest in a series of major construction programmes in just over a decade, the schemes will demonstrate our commitment to sustain, develop and diversify activity at the port. Recent and ongoing projects, including dredging, the expansion of decommissioning facilities at Dales Voe and improved facilities for cruise ships, yachts and roll-on-roll-off vessels, are also encouraging traffic.”

The contract, which is supported by borrowing from Bank of Scotland, has been won by local firm, Tulloch Developments Limited, with work to begin on site early in the new year and completion 12 months later.

Tulloch Developments recently successfully completed a £1.6 million contract to build a new berthing dolphin at the Shetland port’s Holmsgarth terminal to improve the handling of roll-on/roll-off ferries.
