Representatives from Lerwick Port Authority joined international delegates in Stavanger this week for the official anniversary celebrations, marking seven decades since the first Tall Ships Race took place in 1956.
As Sail Training International celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Tall Ships Races, Lerwick Port Authority is proud to recognise the lasting impact sail training has had on generations of young islanders and the important role Shetland continues to play in its success.
Through its support for Sail Training Shetland, Lerwick Port Authority helped sponsor hundreds of young islanders access life-changing sail training experiences that build confidence, teamwork, resilience and leadership. Since its formation, the charity has supported over 600 young people through day sails and offshore voyages, including participation in the internationally renowned Tall Ships Races.
The celebrations coincide with the departure of 16 Shetland trainees who will take part in this year's Tall Ships Races, representing Shetland alongside young people from around the world.
Lerwick has proudly welcomed the Tall Ships Races on three occasions, leaving a lasting legacy for the community and strengthening Shetland's reputation as a world-class maritime destination. The events have attracted thousands of visitors while inspiring many local young people to experience sail training for themselves.
