Lerwick Port Authority will be highlighting the strength of Shetland’s fishing sector at this year’s Skipper Expo International Aberdeen, with the team exhibiting at stand C11.

The Authority, alongside Shetland Islands Council (C14), Scholes Chartered Accountants (C13) and Malakoff Limited (C15), reflect a collaborative approach to promoting the islands’ offer to the fishing industry.

The exhibition provides an opportunity to reinforce the advantages of landing catch in Shetland, including proximity to rich fishing grounds, reducing fuel costs, carbon emissions and transit times, alongside access to modern facilities and services. Through the ‘Land in Shetland’ initiative, partners continue to promote the efficiency and value of landing into Lerwick.

Lerwick Harbour’s whitefish market offers significant capacity for landings, strengthening its position as one of the UK’s leading ports for handling fish. Investment has also included a new container park to support the whitefish fleet.

Further infrastructure enhancements are supporting both whitefish and pelagic sectors, with high-capacity shore power connections enabling vessels to meet power requirements at berth without running auxiliary engines, improving efficiency and reducing emissions.

Ongoing dredging works in the North Harbour area will deepen and widen the North Ness channel and improve access to key berths, including Mair’s Pier and Gremista Quay. The project, due for completion in 2026, will support future development and capacity for the pelagic fleet.
