Second accommodation vessel for port

Lerwick Harbour’s involvement in supporting the oil & gas industry's onshore activity in Shetland will increase again later this month (June) with the arrival of a second accommodation vessel.

The floatel Kalmar is expected to berth at Albert Wharf, adjacent to the town centre, for an initial nine months to house Petrofac employees involved in constructing the Shetland Gas Plant at Sullom Voe.

Under new ownership – Dutch-based Chevalier Floatels - the newly refurbished unit can accommodate up to 220.

The vessel is under charter to Petrofac, the principal contractor for the Gas Plant development being undertaken by Total E&P UK Limited and its joint venture partner, Dong E&P (UK) Limited.

Petrofac has also contracted Bibby Maritime's vessel, Bibby Stockholm, which has been berthed at Lerwick's Morrison Dock since March until year-end at least.

Sandra Laurenson, Lerwick Port Authority’s Chief Executive, said: “The presence of two accommodation vessels is another demonstration of the harbour’s versatile role in supporting the oil & gas industry, onshore and offshore. Modern facilities, including almost 4,000 metres of quays, and ongoing development will ensure the deep-water port continues to meet new opportunities in the future.”
