Lerwick Port Authority has recognised the outstanding contribution of Pilot Charles Smith, who has reached the milestone of 40 years' service with the organisation.
Charles recently received his long service award, recognising four decades of dedication to the safe operation of Lerwick Harbour.
Joining Lerwick Port Authority in 1986 as a Port Controller, Charles became a Harbour Pilot in 1990 and has since played a key role in guiding vessels safely into and out of the harbour. During his career, he has piloted more than 10,500 vessels, ranging from fishing boats and tankers to cruise ships and specialist offshore vessels.
Among the many highlights of his career was piloting the 181,541 gross tonne MSC Virtuosa on its maiden call to Lerwick in 2024 – the largest cruise ship ever to visit the harbour.
