Lerwick Port Authority is a sponsor of a major internal upgrade to be undertaken this winter on the historic Shetland Fifie, Swan LK243.
The work will see the forepeak section of the boat fully re-fitted with an improved layout for the galley, heads, workshop and storage areas. Water tanks, refrigeration and shower facilities will also be upgraded.
It will provide a more practical use of the space and improve on-board experiences for those taking part in sail training trips and public charter sails.
Except for a replacement main mast in 2024, this is the first large-scale upgrade of Swan since the full restoration in 1996.
The £97,600 project will be undertaken by local company, Malakoff Limited.
Port Authority Chief Executive, Captain Calum Grains, said: “We are proud to maintain our long association with Swan and to join local and national sources in helping to fund this important upgrade to the vessel.”
An original Shetland fishing sailboat launched in 1900, Swan was one of the finest boats in the Scottish fishing fleet. It was restored by a team of dedicated volunteers, who formed The Swan Trust to preserve her rich heritage and offer voyages around Shetland and beyond.
Recognised as Scotland’s 2023 Sail Training Vessel of the Year, Swan plays a vital modern role in inspiring the next generation through sail training, using traditional sailing to build skills, confidence, and a sense of connection among young people and the communities she visits.
