Lerwick Port Authority is proud to continue its support of Sail Training Shetland, helping inspire the next generation of seafarers through participation in this year’s spectacular Tall Ships Races.

Shetland trainees have joined counterparts from the Western Isles for hands-on, sail training experiences aboard vessels taking part in Races 2, 3, and 4 of the events, where around 50 international tall ships recently gathered in Aberdeen Harbour (19–22 July).

Sail Training Shetland has organised the placements for a total of 26 young people from both island communities are embracing the challenge of life at sea, taking part in voyages from Dunkirk to Aberdeen, across the North Sea to Kristiansand in Norway, and onwards to Esbjerg, Denmark.

In collaboration with Stornoway Port, Sail Training Shetland has facilitated the participation of 10 young islanders from the Western Isles aboard the historic Shetland vessel Swan.

Six additional Shetland trainees are gaining experience on three larger international vessels Sørlandet, Alexander Von Humbolt II and Excelsior.

A final group of 10 Shetland trainees will embark Swan at the end of July for Race 4, sailing from Kristiansand to Esbjerg, followed by the return journey home to Shetland.

“We are proud to provide ongoing sponsorship to Sail Training Shetland to support young people in developing their maritime skills.

“It’s heartening to see the high level of interest in youth sail training. The experience is not only a test of seamanship and teamwork but a powerful opportunity for personal growth. As a port authority, it’s a privilege to help open up these life-changing experiences to young islanders.”
