Former Lerwick Port Authority Chief Executive, Sandra Laurenson, has received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in the Queen's New Year's Honours list for services to the UK ports industry and the Scottish economy.

Miss Laurenson retired in November having served almost 44 years with the Authority and the predecessor Harbour Trust, the final 11 years as Chief Executive.

Chairman, Ronnie Gair, said: "On behalf of Board members and her former colleagues at the Authority, our congratulations go to Sandra on this well-deserved award, recognising her wider contribution nationally – as well as to Lerwick Harbour and Shetland.”

Ms Laurenson said: “It’s a real privilege to be made an OBE and I’m absolutely delighted. It came completely out of the blue and is much appreciated. It’s a great honour.”

Adding that she is proud that the Port Authority managed to keep pace with the “ever-changing demands” of its customers in the fishing, ferries, oil and gas and cruise sectors, she commented: “It’s great to have witnessed how the port has expanded and will keep growing.”
