Sailing generally has a high profile in the islands and the port has an ongoing commitment to supporting annual sail training opportunities for young people.

Sail Training Shetland (a Charity registered in Scotland, No. SC041182) provides annual sail training experiences for young people between the ages of 15 - 25 years to take part in sail training opportunities on vessels such as tall ships, small traditional ships and modern racing yachts.

Each year Sail Training Shetland invite applications in the spring, to take part in The Tall Ships Races or other boat festivals and events. Applicants receive a truly unique sail training experience which is subsidised with the help of the local business community and grant funders. For all those that take part, it is a truly lifechanging experience, with many finding new strengths and personal skills, or going on to consider a career at sea.
